Aerotek Employees Volunteer at Special Olympics of Maryland Summer Games

Around 60 Aerotek employees spent the weekend of June 8th -10th volunteering at the 2007 Special Olympics of Maryland Summer Games.  The three-day event at Towson University opened with the final leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run.  Aerotek Recruiter II Trainer Mary Ann McNeil carried the torch for one of the earlier portions of the run, in Baltimore on June 6th.  “Carrying the torch for Aerotek was a great honor. Special Olympics is an amazing organization.  I felt very proud that our organization helped with the success of the event.”

The weekend’s festivities were kicked off with a Block Party cookout where Aerotek employees not only prepared and served food for the attendees, but also joined the “cheer teams” in the stands to root for the athletes as they were individually announced through formal introduction.

Throughout the weekend participants enjoyed aquatics, track and field, softball, bocce and other sports.  Volunteers helped give out information, served lunch, assisted in medal presentations and provided timing and scorekeeping.  Hanover recruiter Katie Stephens escorted athletes from one event to the next. “Each athlete was so excited to be participating and even more excited to cheer on their teammates.  The camaraderie among the athletes, coaches, staff, and volunteers was incredible. I look forward to being a part of the event next year as well!”

Allison Ryan of the Hanover office benefited from volunteering at the games. “It was awesome to see all the athletes compete not against each other, but with each other. We can all learn from them the good sportsmanship that we often let run away from us. The athletes cheered for all of their fellow competitors and kept positive attitudes and smiles on their faces for the duration of the games!”  Aerotek employees also ran games and handed out prizes at an evening carnival which allowed them to interact with the athletes in a more social environment.
