The latest report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the U.S. hiring environment is still seeing stable growth, adding 175,000 jobs last month, with job numbers in architecture, engineering and construction also growing, Architect Magazine reports.
According to the news source, the architectural and engineering services sectors added a total of 4,900 jobs last month, and the revised data showed that in the 12 months leading up May, the sectors added a total of 27,400 jobs. This marked an even better reading than the 2,700 jobs that were created in April, and is the best jobs report for the architecture and engineering services segment so far this year.
Construction jobs, which also reflect growth in demand for architecture services, also rose, with 7,000 added last month. This came after a disappointing loss of 6,000 construction jobs in April. Still, the data showed much of the growth in this segment was in contract jobs and heavy/civilian construction projects, which added 5,800 and 3,100 jobs, respectively. This is compared with residential and nonresidential construction projects, which together added fewer than 1,000 workers.
According to Inman News, there was a strong recovery in the housing market last month, which helped spur greater demand for architectural services. As the number of home buyers increases, architects are reporting they are seeing the best business in eight years. Some of the greatest demand has been seen in the need for move-up homes, custom houses and first-homes, data from the American Institute of Architect's first-quarter 2013 Home Design Trends Survey shows.
"With business conditions at residential architecture firms at the strongest growth level since 2005, this is a very encouraging sign for the housing sector and broader economy in general, especially when you look at the year-over-year improvement in the marketplace," said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker.
The results showed demand for architects who design move-up homes rose from a reading of negative 3 in the first quarter of 2012 to 32 this year. There was also an increase in demand for start homes, rising from negative 7 to 21. Demand for custom and luxury homes rose from negative 2 to 16 in the same period.
"We've seen over the past few years, an increased interest in seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor spaces and building in more informal spaces into homes," Baker added. "Because lot sizes don't show any signs of increasing, it's clear that homeowners want to maximize their current square footage to its highest potential, as opposed to increasing it."
