There came a time in my career, after six years as a lead medical receptionist at a small pediatric medical practice, when I realized that, while I enjoyed the work, it didn’t offer opportunities for professional growth.

I got a new job as an Administrative Assistant at a biotech company and thrived because of the diversity of my responsibilities. That job ended four years later when the company executed a massive layoff. It was the first time I’d ever found myself in that situation; I didn’t know what I was going to do next.

It was during the layoff process that I had direct contact with contract staffing agencies; several companies were represented at the separation meeting. I’d never considered contract positions because I didn’t understand them—I didn’t want to work in one place one week, and somewhere else another week.
